Report: Stroke leads to hefty healthcare costs

A recent report reveals stroke-related language impairment, known as aphasia, costs an average of $1,703 per patient more than the cost of stroke alone one year following the stroke.
The research, reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, examined the records of 3,200 Medicare patients from South Carolina who had ischemic strokes in 2004 and found 12 percent had aphasia or language impairment.
“These findings are important because dramatic changes are occurring in healthcare reimbursement, specifically imposed caps on Medicare reimbursement for outpatient speech language pathology and physical therapy,” said Charles Ellis Jr., lead author.
